The Importance of Pediatric Chiropractic Care

Our kids are precious little gifts. From the moment they enter the world, our lives are forever changed. We get to watch them grow, adapt to their surroundings, and develop unique personalities. During infancy and childhood, the body experiences rapid growth and development — which means the nervous and musculoskeletal systems must constantly adapt to these changes.

At Backed by Blackmon Chiropractic, our goal is to ensure your child’s body can grow, move, and thrive the way it was designed to. Our Doctor of Chiropractic has advanced training in Body Work Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, Tethered Oral Tissue Therapy, Physical Rehabilitation, and Pediatric Chiropractic Adjustments, allowing your child to receive safe, well-rounded, and effective care.

Why Chiropractic Care for Kids?

Chiropractic care is a gentle and natural approach that helps address common conditions in infants and children by decreasing dysfunction in the body and supporting proper development. When children are uncomfortable or struggling with symptoms, it can also cause stress for parents — which is why we take a whole-family approach to care.

Every visit begins with a detailed assessment to determine which therapies best fit your child’s individual needs. We may incorporate Body Work Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, Tethered Oral Tissue Therapy, Physical Rehabilitation, and/or Pediatric Chiropractic Adjustments depending on their presentation.

Our adjustments are very gentle — for infants, we use about the same amount of pressure it takes to check the ripeness of a tomato. For infants, we describe adjustments more as gentle mobilizations. Chiropractic care is all about adaptation, and every body is unique — especially growing ones.

Common Conditions We Help With

Pediatric chiropractic care can help improve comfort, function, and overall well-being in children experiencing:

  • Colic-like symptoms

  • Tongue, lip, and buccal ties

  • Torticollis

  • Reflux

  • Sleeping difficulties

  • Breastfeeding and latch challenges

  • Ear infections

  • Constipation and digestive discomfort

  • Developmental delays

Our Treatment Approaches

Body Work Therapy

Body Work Therapy is a full-body musculature and fascial release technique designed to relieve tightness and tension. With over 600 muscles in the body — all surrounded by fascia — even small areas of restriction can cause discomfort or limit motion. This gentle therapy uses stretching and soft tissue techniques to ease tight muscles and fascia, especially in children with tethered oral tissues or torticollis.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy uses light touch to assess and enhance the function of the central nervous system by promoting healthy movement of the fluids surrounding it. This helps remove “blockages” that may interfere with the body’s ability to heal and supports proper alignment of the head, spine, and sacrum. It’s particularly beneficial for infants and children with developmental or structural imbalances.

Tethered Oral Tissues (TOTs)

Tethered Oral Tissues — or tongue, lip, and buccal ties — occur when overly tight or restricted frenulum tissue limits oral movement. TOTs can interfere with feeding, digestion, weight gain, and even body positioning due to muscular tension. At Backed by Blackmon, we offer pre- and post-frenectomy therapy to prepare your child’s mouth for the procedure and to support optimal healing afterward. There is also a chance that the oral work that is performed in the office will loosen the tissue enough to where a procedure is no longer needed. We work directly with pediatric dentists in the area to ensure the best course of care.

Physical Rehabilitation

Our Pediatric Physical Rehabilitation program focuses on helping infants and children improve strength, balance, and coordination as they grow. Rehabilitation exercises are gentle, purposeful movements designed to address muscular imbalances and weaknesses that can affect a child’s development. This type of care is especially beneficial for little ones experiencing torticollis, developmental delays, or other muscular differences that make it harder for them to reach milestones like rolling, sitting, crawling, or walking.

Early intervention is key — when muscular imbalances are corrected early on, it helps support proper movement patterns, joint mobility, and nervous system function. By promoting balanced muscle strength and flexibility, we can help your child develop the coordination and motor control needed to meet each developmental milestone with greater ease and confidence.

When Should My Child See a Chiropractor?

Birth is one of the most physically demanding events our bodies ever go through — for both mom and baby. That’s why we often recommend bringing your child in as soon as you feel comfortable leaving the house. During the initial visit, our Doctor of Chiropractic performs a detailed history and gentle exam to evaluate your child’s developmental status and identify any dysfunction before it causes unwanted symptoms.

The earlier dysfunction is addressed, the faster it typically resolves. However, it’s never too late — if your child is older, we’ll create an individualized care plan to restore balance and function no matter their age.
